The Freedom Tower was expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
Until they were tragically destroyed on 11 September 2001, the World Trade Centre twin towers loomed over the Manhattan skyline as a symbol of the dynamic New York metropolis.
For 50,000 people the towers were a workplace, housing at least 1,200 firms, representing more than 60 countries. At least 80,000 people visited on business every weekday.
The concept of a World Trade Centre was born in the late 1950s, in a bid to resurrect what was a depressed area. The first tenants moved into of the towers in 1970, and the Centre was dedicated in 1973.
On the 4 July 2004, the symbolic cornerstone for the new Freedom Tower (known also as One World Trade Center) was laid. The project had been delayed due to acrimonious disputes over money, security, and design but the last major issues were resolved on April 26, 2006.
The Freedom Tower was expected to be completed by the end of 2011. However, in 2008 the estimated completion of the tower was pushed back to the end of 2013.
This new construction will become the world’s tallest building when completed. It will beat the WTC’s height by over 30m, with its total height of 1,776 feet (541 m), which is symbolic of the year the United States Declaration of Independence was signed (July 4, 1776).
Three other high-rise office buildings are planned for the site along Greenwich Street, and they will surround the World Trade Center Memorial, which is under construction. The area will also be home to a museum dedicated to the history of the site.
In the meantime, there is a free public viewing wall at Ground Zero. Surrounding the site, this steel grid is flanked by large panels describing the events of 9/11 as well as some of New York’s history.
