United Nations Headquarters

Sede delle Nazioni Unite New York

It took a group of architects six years to design the 168m high United Nation Building on the East River of Midtown Manhattan. Although geographically located in New York City, the UN headquarters lies in an international zone with its own post office.
You can visit it with a guided tour that takes an hour.
It includes the Secretariat Building, the General Assembly Hall and Conference Wing.
The decision to erect the UN Building in New York was made after John D Rockefeller Jr donated $8.5 million to the City. A team of architects from several nations, led by American Wallace Harrison, combined their talents to design the UN Building between 1947 and 1953. It was completed in 1963.
There are restaurants, shops selling goods from many parts of the world and a crafts shop. Also worth seeing are works of art donated by member countries. Beautiful rose gardens overlook the East River.
