This church dates from 1799 and is built on the site of the Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant’s farm or bowery.
The Greek Revival steeple was added in 1826, and the cast-iron portico in 1858. Further restoration was carried out after the fire of 1978.
The church is old in years but young in outlook. Pews have been removed to allow dancers, poets and performing artists to entertain. Since 1920 the church has been a centre for avant-garde cultural activity as well as worship.
