Times Square is one of New York cult places. The neon signs which lighten up this area, mostly advertising signs, represent one of the best businesses for American entrepreneurs. For instance the sign on the NASDAQ Market Site cost something like 37 million dollars, while to rent the whole place you have to pay no less than 2 million dollars. Obviously the income coming from the ads must be enough rewarding to justify such an expense.

This corner of New York is particularly fascinating. Once a property of one of George Washington's generals during the Independence War, it was ceased in the XIX century as an agricultural land destined to cultivation or cattle breeding. The new owner, John Jacob Astor, a skilful entrepreneur, divided the land into smaller building lots, and sold them to hotels and estate agencies.

The New York Times’ editor moved his offices in a building on the 45th street, persuading the city mayor to build an underground station in its proximity. Hence derived the name of the famous Times Square, whereas the building hosting the headquarter of the newspaper is called today One Times Square.

In the early decades of the 20th century this place was especially attended by showmen and film stars, also thanks to the vicinity with Broadway, but the place suffered an age of decline during the economic depression, and turned into a district of ill fame.

Afterward, the new mayor Rudolph Giuliani included Times Square in the massive recovery project of the city, and the district was finally cleaned out of pushers, criminals and ambiguous clubs, winning back its past splendour.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Times Square was chosen as stage of New Years’ celebrations, taking place every 31st December with an amazing show.

Today, thanks to Giuliani’s efforts, who’s probably the most beloved mayor by New York citizens, Times Square is a reference point for the locals and tourists, one of the most watched and preserved areas, and a symbol self for the city.

From May 24th Times Square Closed to Traffic

From May 2009, Broadway will be closed to vehicle traffic for five blocks at Times Square, turning part of the “Crossroads of the World” into a pedestrian mall of throbbing lights, animated billboards and towering skyscrapers. A second pedestrian promenade will be created from 33rd to 35th streets on Broadway by Herald Square, where Macy’s dominates the intersection.

The city believes the move will reduce pollution, cut down on pedestrian accidents and actually increase the flow of traffic.
