Battery Park and Castle Clinton

Battery Park - New York

The green esplanade overlooks New York Harbor, Staten Island, Liberty Island and Governor’s Island.
Established in 1870 from 22 acres (9ha) of landfill, it is named after the battery of cannons which once defended the old shoreline (now State Street). The park has lots of statuary and welcome greenery.
Also in the park is Castle Clinton, a circular, brick-built fortress which was on an island 60m offshore when it was built in 1811.
It became an entertainment centre called Castle Garden in 1824, then an immigration depot. About 8 million people entered the USA through Castle Clinton between 1855 and 1890. Later it became an aquarium and now houses a museum, with a ticket office for Ellis and Liberty Island ferries.

It opens daily 8.30am-5pm with free admission.

In Battery Park is a statue of Giovanni da Verrazano, who sailed into New York Harbour in 1524, and the Netherland Memorial commemorating the exchange of beads ($24 worth) that purchased Manhattan from the Indians in 1626.
