Bowne House is one of the city’s oldest houses, built in 1661, now a museum illustrating how Quaker John Bowne successfully led the struggle for religious freedom in the 17th century when the Quakers were banned under Dutch rule. Generations of Bownes lived at the house until 1947, and their furnishings and ornamentals are well displayed.
