One of the great engineering feats of the 19th century, and the first suspension bridge made of steel wire cables, it is still considered by many to be the most beautiful bridge in the world.
Before it opened in 1883, the only way across the East River was by ferry.

The work, led by John Roebling and his son, took 15 years. The view of Manhattan from the pedestrian walkway is spectacular, especially at night.
