Settled by early 20th-century immigrants from China, this is a vibrant enclave. Once in Chinatown, it is easy to be sidetracked as food shops, restaurants, coffee houses, Buddhist temples and little bazaars command attention.
The main streets in Chinatown are Mulberry Street, that extends north into Little Italy, Mott Street, the lively heart of New York’s Chinatown, and Canal Street with its food stalls piled high with herbs, Chinese mushrooms, bean curd, fresh seafood and exotic fruit and vegetables.
On the corner between Mulberry Street and Bayard Street, is the Museum of Chinese in Americas, while in Mott Street you can admire the Church of the Transfiguration, built early in the 19th century and where the Chinese Catholics worship.
