An outstanding skyscraper in Art Deco architecture, it was briefly the world’s tallest building until the Empire State Building went up in 1931.
Its unusual stainless steel scaled spire, illuminated at night, makes it a familiar part of the New York skyline.
Visitors are permitted only into the lobby, which has African marble walls. Ceiling murals depict workers constructing the spire.
In the building is the Edison’s Conservation Center, with hands-on exhibits, energy saving and money-saving ideas, and experts at hand to answer questions on conservation.
