
Street parades are a way of life in New York. Periodically, one faction or another makes its presence felt in a chuck of Fifth Avenue or some other location.
The first major event after Christmas is the Chinese New Year celebrated in January or February on the first full moon after 19 January. Dragons, firecrackers, elaborate costumes and the banishment of evil spirits are features of the pageantry centred on Mott Street.

The Greeks celebrate their Independence Day with decorated floats in Fifth Avenue, usually in April, or in May if the day falls during the Orthodox Lent.
The legendary Easter parade provides an excuse to show off new and fashionable clothing, particularly ladies' hats. Everyone gets a generous taste of ethnic foods at the Ninth Avenue International Festival in May.
Little Italy has two festivals, commemorating San Gennaro for ten days in September, with street stalls, music and fast food, and St Anthony of Padua for two weeks in June. Each festival involves bearing a saint’s statue through the streets.

The Gay Pride Parade in June, with the accent on drag, marks the day in 1969 when Christopher Street riot paved the way for the gay rights movement.
The museums have their day on the second Tuesday in June when, between 6pm and 9pm, the Museum Mile Festival allows visitors entry into nine museums free of charge, with plenty of outdoor music and art demonstrations for those who prefer to stay outdoors.
In autumn the New Yorker Festival, a literary festival, is held at many locations, where visitors can mingle and share brunch with writers, editors and artists.
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with its amazing floats is an American institution, broadcast live across the nation.
