Not just a railway terminal, more an art form, and certainly a great engineering feast. Built in the Renaissance style over a ten-year period, it opened in 1913 with a vast main concourse – one of the world’s largest rooms.
It is 143m long, and the barrel-vaulted ceiling, with 2,500 stars painted on a night sky background, is 46m high.
There are huge windows, and Hercules, Athena and Mercury decorate the station clock.
Elevated Park Avenue runs over the top of the Grand Central, which was declared a national landmark in 1978, thwarting a proposal to put up an office block at the site.
The dining concourse at the tower level includes the popular Oyster Bar, and offers a wide selection of cuisine.
Free tours of the station are held at 12.30 on Wednesdays (tel. 212 340 2345)
