This refuge, ideal for nature walks, straddles the southern boundaries of Brooklyn and Queens, and lies beneath the JFK Airport flight path.
Nevertheless, some 300 species of birds and small mammals manage to live there undisturbed, especially egrets and herons, and an abundance of waders and other shorebirds.
Covering more than 3600ha of land and water, the refuge is almost as big as Manhattan.
