The Met houses works of art from ancient civilisations to the present day. Among them are hundreds of world-famous masterpieces. As well as galleries of painting and sculpture, the museum has displays of tapestries, musical instruments, costumes and ornaments.
The five major collections are European Painting, American Painting, Primitive Art, Medieval Painting and Egyptian Antiquities. The American Wing includes rooms dedicated to various periods in the nation’s history. On the roof, open in the summer, is a garden of contemporary sculpture. The design of the museum includes courtyard gardens with soaring glass roofs and delightfully restful green areas with interesting statuary.
To do justice to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, time is needed. Since only a limited amount of culture can be absorbed in, say, three or four hours, what you really need is to devote several half-days to the Met until you have sated your particular appetite. The Met is a vast treasure house, occupying four blocks, and containing more than three million priceless exhibits. Study a plan of its floors before you launch yourself out of the magnificent Great Hall.
Inevitably, as happens with such a huge collection, not all sections are permanently open, so anyone planning a visit with one vital interest in mind would be advised to enquire in advance whether is currently on display.
The Met is one of several museums which have a suggested contribution instead of a fixed admission charge.
That contribution also allows admission on the same day to the Met’s medieval collection in Tryon Park, overlooking the Hudson River.
