A large, simple church built in the 19th century, this was where the preacher Henry Ward Beecher led his campaign against slavery before the Civil War.
The church was a mainline station on the ‘underground railroad’ that smuggled slaves to freedom. A great campaigning orator, Breecher brought many influential and famous worshippers to the church, including Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln.
Tours are available following the Sunday 11am service or by appointment.
