Thinking big came naturally to financier John D Rockefeller Jr. In the late 1920s, in defiance of the thick cloud of depression hanging low over North America and the West, he decided to go ahead with a long-held ambition: to create an architectural business and entertainment complex in the centre of Manhattan.
The Rockefeller Centre is a 19-building, 9ha complex providing a base for much of the nation’s television programming, and headquarters for international corporations. Underground concourses with shops and restaurants link the buildings.

From October to March the Plaza features a skating rink. In the warm months it becomes a café-restaurant, presided over by a 5.5m bronze figure of Prometheus, covered with gold leaf – one of the city’s most photographed statues.

Rockefeller Center

The developers of the Centre achieved to construct a city-within-a-city, making optimum use of air, light and transportation facilities. Upmarket shops selling a wide range of goods surround the Lower Plaza and are also at ground level of most of the Centre’s skyscrapers. Theatres and a variety of restaurants are dotted about.
In 2005, the Rockefeller Centre’s observation decks were reopened after a 20-year closure. Known as Top of the Rock, these are on the 67th to the 70th floors and provide breathtaking panoramic views.
The ones looking down on Central Park can’t be seen from anywhere else in the city.
