New York is one of the world’s great shopping cities. Famous for its magnificent department stores, New York is also a discount shopper’s delight. Designer-label clothes from fashion’s top names are offered in the Orchard Street area, in the Lower East Side, at a fraction of big-store prices. For electronic goods at discount prices, try Canal Street and Essex Street downtown.

Century 21, “New York's Best Kept Secret", is hardly a secret. You'll have to battle the throngs of "in the know" shoppers, but you won't mind when you discover the deep discounts available as you make your way through the maze of offerings at this discount department store. Early morning or mid-afternoon tend to be calmer. Century 21 is across the street from the World Trade Centre site.

Entertainment Outlet (103 W 14th St, between 7th Ave & 6th Ave) is a must see for film lovers. This place has it all and has it cheap. Look here for that disc before going to Tower Records or Virgin - it's a lot cheaper and you'll find variety.

Strand Bookshop (828 Broadway, near Union Square) houses the city's largest collection of rare books, and is also a contender for the title of world's largest used bookstore. Its slogan is "18 Miles of Books". A family-owned business with more than 200 employees, the Strand was opened in 1927 and gave jobs in the store to many Lower East Side artists, including Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine. The store occupies three and a half floors.

Dean & De Luca (121 Prince Street, SoHo) is a wonderful chain of upscale grocery stores. The first one was established in SoHo by Joel Dean and Giorgio DeLuca in 1977. They travelled the world to find artisan-produced foods that pleased their customers, not to mention themselves. They wanted products that fired their imaginations, challenged their tastes and turned dinner into a creative exercise. They were among the first American importers of balsamic vinegar. Dean & DeLuca offers gourmet treats for cooking, eating and entertaining, including coffee, tea, cheese, seafood, caviar, truffles, foie gras, chocolate & confections, oil & vinegar, cookware and spices. They also have a wine division and can recommend food and wine pairings for any event or for a special dinner at home.
