Barely 30 years ago, SoHo (South of Houston Street) was described as a commercial slum, and there was a strong move to tear the place down.
It was saved by the efforts of preservationists and a powerful artistic lobby.
The area’s artistic flavour is evident in the number of art galleries in the neighbourhood.
Most of them are in Broadway, while Greene Street boasts the city’s longest stretch of cast-iron buildings. Food, presented as an art form, can be seen at the upmarket Dean and DeLuca store across the street.
Canal Street, the frontier between SoHo and TriBeCa, is a vibrant thoroughfare with a market atmosphere and stores offering counterfeit luxuries, bargain electronics, book and clothing.
Although it marks the neighbourhood’s western edge, West Broadway is unquestionably SoHo’s beating heart.
Here you can find more galleries and beautiful buildings.
