Wall Street has become synonymous with New York’s Financial District, which in fact extends outwards from Wall Street. It actually leads a schizophrenic life. At weekends, tourism rules. The skyscrapers are empty and visitors are free to amble along, noting the more important buildings. On weekdays, any tourist strolling along the sidewalk is likely to be mown down by speeding pedestrians. Everyone is busy-busy-busy, and essential inter-office activity has to be completed as quickly as possible.
Wall Street cleaves through the skyscrapers for barely a third of mile (0.5km) – at one hand, an arrow view of the East River, at the other, Trinity Church.
It follows the line of the wooden wall built by the Dutch to keep the Native Americans and British trade rivals at bay.
A statue of George Washington on the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial at Wall and Nassau Streets marks the spot where the first US president was sworn in. The New York Stock Exchange holds a prominent position and a short walk away is the World Financial Centre.
Other major financial institutions in the vicinity include the Renaissance-style Federal Reserve Bank, the Chase Manhattan Bank and Plaza, and the 1932 Irving Trust Company.
Bowling Green Park, a tiny oasis in the midst of the monetary madness and New York’s first public park, offers a breath of relatively fresh air.
Then, when the working day is over, the commuters pile into the bars and eateries of South Street Seaport, Chambers Street and Beaver Street, getting up their strength to face the homeward bridge-and-tunnel journey.
This is their happy hour.
